Nicolay Bogdanov-Belsky
Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky Russian plastic artist considered as the Master of Russian realism. was born in Shitikov Belsky, Russia, on December 8, 1868. He studied successively at the S. A. Raczynski School; in icon painting at the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra, during 1883, and officially at the Moscow School of Painting, where he received classes in painting, sculpture and architecture between 1884 and 1889. After finishing his studies at the School, he completed a study trip to Paris, where he received classes from F. Colarossi and Fernand Cormon. In 1894 he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, which he attended for two years. In 1889, he was awarded a large silver medal. From 1903 he worked as a teacher, and an active member of the Academy of Arts in 1914. He became a member of several societies and artistic groups: the Peredvizhniki* from 1895, and to which they belonged, among others: Isaak Levitán, Iliá Repin , Aleksei Savrasov, Valentin Serov, and Vasily Surikov. He also joined the Kuindzhi Arkhip from 1909, of which he was a founding member, and president from 1913 to 1918. In 1914 he became a full member of the Academy of Arts. He was a member of the Russian Fraternitas Arctica, in Riga. In 1944 he became seriously ill and was admitted to a Berlin hospital. He died in Berlin on February 19, 1945, being buried in the Tegel Russian Cemetery in the German capital.
