Rafaél Ramón González

Venezuelan plastic artist, in 1909 in Caracas with a scholarship from the government of Edo. Portuguesa begins her studies in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts; his trip coincided with the student strike demanding an opening in the study curriculum. This, together with the suspension of the scholarship, forced him to return to his town, where he continued for a time dedicating himself to agricultural and herding activities. In 1914 he returned to Caracas, where his narrow economic situation forced him to carry out various trades. In 1918 he enrolled in the Academy and, under the guidance of Cirilo Almeida Crespo and Cruz Álvarez García, studied for two years. In 1920 he abandoned his studies after meeting Rafael Monasterios, with whom he founded a society of house painters and made several trips to the interior of the country; in one of them he settles for several months in Valencia (Edo. Carabobo). In 1921 he exhibited some of his paintings at the Manrique Photography in Caracas. In 1931 he held his first individual exhibition at the Central Club and met the painter Antonio Edmundo Monsanto. In 1932 he settled in San Juan de los Morros and worked with the sculptor Alejandro Colina. In 1936 they named Antonio Edmundo Monsanto as director of the School of Plastic and Applied Arts and he requested his collaboration to restructure the institute; González agrees and from that year until 1967 he will dictate the chairs of landscape, drawing and plastic composition. In 1944 he ventured into engraving; He makes etchings, woodcuts and drypoint. He worked as an illustrator in the magazines Elite and Billiken, from Caracas. In 1946 he received the Official Painting Prize at the VII Official Hall. In 1958 he joined the Venezuelan representation at the XXIX Venice Biennale.
