Tomás Golding

Venezuelan plastic artist, born in Caracas on August 10, 1909 and died in 1981. In 1920 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Caracas. In 1925 he went to New York to continue his studies at the Cooper Union Academy. In 1931, again in Venezuela, he transcended executing landscape motifs in paintings in the company of Cruz Álvarez Sales and Humberto González. In this first stage, throughout the thirties, he worked on the coast in pointillist painting, in white tones, very close to the spirit of Reverón, whose influence is evident in his works. This stage was followed by a period characterized by the baroque nature of his chromatic solutions, and by a theme inspired by the hills and ravines of Caracas, until he reached his most personal style, which is the period to which his work belongs, inspired by plantations, groves, seascapes, among others. He had individual exhibitions at the Art Center in New York, 1931; Central Club, Caracas, 1931; Club Venezuela, 1938; MBAs, 1938, 1941 and 1953; Ateneo de Caracas, 1944 and Galería Acquavella, 1966. He won first prize in the Pictorial Contest of the Ateneo de Caracas, held in 1944.
