Luis Barreto

Venezuelan painter, he began his artistic training in 1968 at the Free Art Workshop (El Tigre, Edo. Anzoátegui), where he studied painting, drawing and sculpture and participated in collective exhibitions until 1971. This year he traveled to Ciudad Bolívar and frequented the workshops of Inciba art, where he studies drawing and engraving for a year. In 1972, he moved to Caracas to study architecture at the UCV until 1974. Between 1974 and 1977 he participated in the annual editions of the University Hall of Art and in the art rooms of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the UCV. In 1981 he took part in the First Biennial of Young Artists (MACC). His pictorial work is part of abstraction. Barreto does not previously establish a compositional scheme, but directly captures the surface of the painting with very personal shapes, planes and colors in its resolution. With intense colors and powerful gestures, Barreto's painting is shredded from preconceived forms and ideas to express itself in structures of different planes and geometries of intense colors and careful tonal gradations. In 1982 he traveled to Milan (Italy) and studied graphic design at the IED; this year he receives the special prize of the Jury in the V Salon de la Malpenza in Milan (Italy). In 1985 he returns to Venezuela and resides in Caracas. Luis Barreto's painting investigates figurative forms and takes them to an extreme degree of schematization, playing with planes of various heights and colors endowed with certain constructive values. His awards and recognitions are: 1968 First Prize Rotary Club, Free Art Workshop, El Tigre, Edo.
