Alirio Palacios
Alirio Palacios was one of the most versatile Venezuelan painters, cartoonists and engravers of the second half of the 20th century. Framed in the new figuration of the 60s of Venezuela, and the boom of the drawing of the 70s, which made him deserving of the National Prize of Plastic Arts in 1972. His work walked between figures that became spots, in a symbiosis between the abstract and the figurative. Palacios made his art a cosmopolitan style of life and creation. He was born in 1938. In the mid-1950s he began studying pure art and graphic arts at the School of Plastic and Applied Arts in Caracas. In 1959 he represented Venezuela at the VII World Festival of Youth and Students, in Vienna. Trip that began his cosmopolitan life, to settle in New York, alternating with Caracas. In 1961 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. The following year he was awarded a scholarship by the Chinese government to attend the University of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he studied woodcut and developed the calligraphic line that will become his private label. In 1968 he designed the National Magazine of Culture and IMAGEN Magazine, also began his studies at the University of Warsaw, to specialize in graphic techniques. The following year he spent it at the engraving workshop of the West Berlin Academy of Art. In 1973 he studied at the Center for Contemporary Engraving, in Geneva, and in 1974 etching and mezzotint in Krakow (Poland). In 1976 he founded, together with other artists, the TAGA (Taller de Artes Gráficas). In 1977 he joined the CEGRA (Center for the Study and Teaching of Graphic Arts) in Caracas, and represented Venezuela at the XIV Biennial of Sao Paulo, along with Carlos Hernández Guerra. In 1985 he reinstated his workshop in Soho, New York. In 1987 he was assigned to the permanent mission of Venezuela to the UN. In the nineties he started the series of Horses, inspired by Chinese painting. The teacher died in 2015 in Caracas, at 77 years old.
